ACT Law Courts
The ACT Supreme Court is a superior court of record exercising civil, criminal and appellate jurisdiction. Appeals against convictions and sentences imposed by the Children’s Court and the Magistrate’s Court can be made to the Supreme Court. Generally these appeals will be heard by a single judge. Criminal trials may be heard before a judge and jury, or by judge alone.
The first sitting of the Court was held at Acton House Courthouse on 12 February 1934. Early in 1935 the Supreme Court was moved to Hotel Acton. Arrangements were made subsequently (from January 1941) for the Supreme Court to be moved to the new Patents Office in the suburb of Parkes. The Court is currently located at 6 Knowles Place, Canberra City. The first sittings of the Court in its current location took place on 9 May 1963.
